Now, what classes are available for you to take in high school that directly addresses all these issues? If you said “Family & Consumer Sciences”...you’re right! Your Family and Consumer Sciences class, in addition to focusing on preparing you for college and/or careers, also emphasizes preparation for life! Family & Consumer Sciences education prepares students to engage in the work of the family by critically examining recurring concerns of the family and proactively working toward individual, family and community well-being. Our role is to prepare students for life, work, and citizenship through the unique focus on the work of the family. Did you ever consider that if everyone could successfully learn and apply all the information offered in Family & Consumer Sciences that many of those societal problems listed above would not exist?!! Human beings do not learn by osmosis. Simply being around others who are learning and applying the principles of Family & Consumer Sciences does not mean that you can. It is a course of study, like most others, that requires study, concentration and desire to learn. What is encouraging is the fact that everyone CAN do well in Family & Consumer Sciences class if they put in the effort. To ignore the career preparation aspect of the Family & Consumer Sciences curriculum, however, would be negligent. The basis for many occupations in the FCS field relates to either the “prevention” or the “cure” of societal problems OR to providing skills and services that benefit families or the community. Doors to many jobs open with your knowledge in curriculum areas such as Human and Child Development, Housing & Interior Design, Management and Consumerism, Foods & Nutrition, Health Sciences, and Textiles, Clothing, & Design. So, make a decision now that will help you live life to the fullest, and find satisfaction in many avenues of pursuit. Enroll in a Family & Consumer Sciences class, and if you’ve already done that, then renew your commitment to learning! Mrs. Swarthout
